VirtualBox 2 released

VirtualBoxSun Microsystems has released VirtualBox 2. VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. Host hardware includes Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, Solaris and Open Solaris. Best of all, it is free.

According to TUAW, Following features are new to Mac versions:

  • 64-bit OS guest support (only on 64-bit hosts, as one might expect)
  • New native Leopard user interface on Mac OS X hosts
  • New-version notifier
  • Guest property information interface
  • Host Interface Networking on Mac OS X hosts
  • Framework for collecting performance and resource usage data (metrics)
  • Added SATA asynchronous IO (NCQ: Native Command Queuing) when accessing raw disks/partitions (major performance gain)

Sun Microsystems releases VirtualBox in two versions. The full VirtualBox package (in binary form) is released free of charge for personal use and evaluation. There's also a VirtualBox Open Source Edition (OSE) which is almost the same full VirtualBox package, except some enterprise features. The source code is released under GPL.
