Apple updates iMac supporting up to 8GB DDR3 RAM

Available today, the new iMac line includes a 20-inch model for only US$1,199 and the flagship 24-inch iMac which is priced more affordably that ever before. For the same US$1,499 price as the previous generation 20-inch iMac, the new 24-inch iMac delivers a 30 percent larger display, twice the memory and twice the storage. It features the Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at speeds up to 3.06 GHz, memory up to 8GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory, up to 1TB Serial ATA hard drive. There are also several options for graphics processors: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (256MB shared), NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 (256MB), NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 (512MB), and ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory. Users can also run a full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display.

The full-featured iMac line starts with the 20-inch iMac with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory, a 320GB Serial ATA hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics. The 24-inch iMac includes up to a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory (upgradeable to 8GB), a 640GB or 1TB Serial ATA hard drive, and a variety of graphics technology from NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 or ATI Radeon HD 4850 discrete graphics for ultimate performance.

Every iMac features a glossy display with a built-in iSight video camera, mic and speakers in a thin aluminum and glass design. The new iMac also includes a Mini DisplayPort connector for a pure digital signal to Apple’s new 24-inch LED Cinema Display with adapters available for DisplayPort, VGA, DVI and Dual-Link DVI displays.

  • 20-inch or 24-inch widescreen LCD display;
  • 2.66 GHz, 2.93 GHz or 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB shared L2 cache;
  • (20-inch model) 2GB 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM expandable to 8GB;
  • (24-inch model) 4GB 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM expandable to 8GB;
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120; with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 130; with 512MB GDDR3 memory, or ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 512MB GDDR3;
  • from 320GB up to a 1TB Serial ATA hard drive running at 7200 rpm;
  • a slot-load 8x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW);
  • Mini DisplayPort for video output (adapters sold separately);
  • built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking & Bluetooth 2.1+EDR;
  • built-in iSight video camera;
  • Gigabit Ethernet port;
  • four USB 2.0 ports;
  • one FireWire 800 port;
  • built-in stereo speakers and microphone; and
  • the Apple Keyboard, Mighty Mouse.

The new iMac is available now. Apple last updated iMac in April 2008. Although the CPU speed may seem to be the same, this new update is even greener, and features more USB 2.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, and expandable of up to 8GB DDR3 RAM.
